Many queries regarding the transmission of strep throat bacterial infection has surfaced specially circulating the questions such as, What is strep throat? What are the symptoms of strep throat? Can it be transmitted during sex or any other intimate activity such as oral sex?
The answer lies in understanding the ways by which a strep throat infection can spread to other individuals.
For this we need to conceptualize, what is strep throat infection and what are the ways it gets transmitted from one individual to another. It is a bacterial infection and can be transmitted to others as suggested by center for disease control, US (cdc.gov) in the following two ways:

1. Respiratory Droplets

Strep throat infection is caused by Group A streptococcus (group A strep) and they often live in the nose and throat region. Infected people can spread this while talking, coughing, sneezing or by kissing.
If an infected individual is in an intimate relation with another individual, he/she might touch the surface where the other individual has sneezed or coughed before and then touch their mouth or nose. In this way, it can spread and can cause harm to the other individual.

2. Direct Contact

Usually, in strep throat infection, one can also get infected if the other person comes in direct contact of the fluids from the sores of one with infection. It might get other person infected if he has open wound near his genitals and can result in transmission of strep A bacteria.
What is the difference between Oral gonorrhea and strep throat?
Some individuals confuse oral gonorrhea with strep throat after being indulged in a sexual activity as both result in causing sore throat. Following will help you understand the difference between oral gonorrhea and strep throat.

Difference in Symptoms:

Strep throat and oral gonorrhea differ largely on symptoms and one can tell which condition one have based upon the feeling. Although, you must consider that both conditions also share some prominent symptoms such as sore throat, swelling of lymph nodes and fever.

Oral gonorrhoea and strep throat have very different symptoms, so you may be able to tell which one you have by how you feel. But keep in mind that both can cause a fever, a sore throat, and swollen lymph nodes in the neck.

Some other signs of strep throat are:

  • It hurts to swallow
  • Irritated, red tonsils (you might see white patches or pus)
  • You have small red spots on the roof of your mouth.

If you have a cough, a runny nose, conjunctivitis, or a hoarse, raspy voice, you may have viral tonsillitis, not strep throat.

Oral gonorrhea can cause a sore throat, swollen lymph nodes in the neck, and fever. It can also make it hard to swallow.

It’s also important to know the signs of genital gonorrhea, because if you or your sexual partner have it, you could spread the bacteria to your throat. Some signs of gonorrhea are:

• Bleeding between periods

• Abnormal vaginal discharge (it may be bloody or yellow)

• Discharge from the penis that isn’t normal (it may be white, yellow, or green)

• Anal discharge

• The area around the anus itches

• When you urinate, you feel pain or burn.

• Pain when you go to the bathroom

• Swollen Testicles

They Both are Caused by Different Bacterium:

Oral gonorrhea and strep throat infection are caused by different bacteria. There locality of presence is also different than each other. One gets transmitted by inhaling or touching surface or fluid infected with strep A bacteria but the bacteria responsible for oral gonorrhea is usually present in vaginal or penis fluid.

In a Nutshell:

Having a sore throat, a fever and swollen glands not always mean you are infected with strep throat or oral gonorrhea. They are mostly caused by viruses and go away in a matter of time but keeping a close watch over the symptoms can help you decide better which health treatment you must seek.
